Every year, as the rains of summer give way to the clear skies of autumn, the Oromo people gather at Hora Arsadi β the sacred lake near Bishoftu β to celebrate Irreecha, the most joyous and widely observed festival in Oromo culture. In 2026, more than three million people attended the lakeside thanksgiving ceremony, making it once again one of Africa's largest annual gatherings.
The Meaning of Irreecha
Irreecha is a thanksgiving ritual rooted in the Oromo spiritual tradition of Waaqeffannaa β the indigenous monotheistic faith that venerates Waaqa (God) and the natural world. The name itself derives from the word irreessa, meaning "to give thanks." Celebrants wade into the lake's shallows carrying fresh grass and colourful flowers, offering them to Waaqa in gratitude for surviving the rainy season and looking forward to a harvest of peace and abundance.
"Irreecha is not just a festival β it is a covenant between the Oromo and their creator," explained Professor Gemechu Megersa, a scholar of Oromo studies at Addis Ababa University. "It embodies the Gadaa values of peace, democracy, and unity that have sustained Oromo civilisation for centuries."
History and Recognition
While Irreecha has been celebrated for centuries, it only gained formal state recognition in Ethiopia in the post-1991 era following the adoption of ethnic federalism. In recent years, UNESCO has recognised Hora Arsadi as a site of intangible cultural heritage, and there are ongoing efforts to have Irreecha itself inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The festival was tragically marred in 2016 when a stampede following a government security response led to hundreds of deaths. That event galvanised Oromo political consciousness and remains a watershed moment in recent history. Today, Irreecha is celebrated with heightened community stewardship and security coordination to ensure a safe and dignified gathering.
2026 Celebration: Colour, Song, and Unity
This year's Irreecha was marked by an explosion of colour. Attendees wore traditional Oromo attire β women in white cotton dresses adorned with colourful woven borders, men in white robes with saffron-yellow and black embroidery. Abba Gadaa elders led prayers at the water's edge as thousands sang traditional songs.
Music artists including Hachalu Hundessa's protΓ©gΓ©s performed newly composed songs blending traditional instruments β the krar lyre and sinbirroo flute β with modern arrangements, drawing standing ovations from the crowd.
Irreecha in the Diaspora
Beyond Hora Arsadi, Oromo communities across the world hold their own Irreecha celebrations, from Minneapolis to Melbourne, London to Toronto. These diaspora events serve as vital anchors of cultural identity, gathering communities across generations to maintain language, song, and tradition far from home.
"When we celebrate Irreecha here in Minnesota, my children see that they are Oromo β not just American," said Fatuma Roba, a community organiser in the Twin Cities. "That connection is everything to us."
Looking Forward
As Irreecha continues to grow in visibility and attendance, cultural advocates are calling for greater investment in documentation and education. "The younger generation should know the prayers, the songs, the meaning behind each gesture at the lake," said elder Dinka Tulu. "Irreecha is our living heritage β we must pass it on intact."
